Essayを読んで評価するというadmission側の気持ちを、皆さんは想像したことがありますか？

Good Writingの書き方の定義は？
ありません。
どうすればgood writingを書けるか、というsingle answerは無いのですが答えを提示するならば、どんな手段を用いても構いませんのでaudienceを楽しませること。という点に集約されると思います。
Essayを書くにあたって、最重要項目になるのがaudienceの重要性です。
過去に拝見した日本人の方のessayおよび付随の書類をみた私の感想は全て、admission committeeにevaluateしてもらうとはどういうことか？というイメージ自体が欠落しているな、という印象を受けました。Audienceが重要です！という話は過去essayに取り組まれた生徒からは聞いたことがありません。
皆さんが書いたことのあるEnglish essayはTOEFL/IELTSのみ、という方がほとんどになるでしょう。TOEFL/IELTS EssayとApplication Essayの違いとは何でしょうか？
TOEFL/IELTSのessayは読んでもらえることがほぼほぼ保証されています。どの様な内容で提出をされても読んでもらいevaluateしてもらえる、という前提の元に作成されていると思います。無意識かもしれませんが。
Application Essayの場合TOEFL/IETLSとの最大の違いはその形式や分量ではなく読み手が途中で読むことを放棄する、というoptionを持っているという点になります。おそらく皆さん読んでもらえると無意識の前提のもとに作成されていると思いますが、essayの大部分はまともに/場合によっては全く読まれていない可能性があります。そもそも読んでもらえる、という前提はapplication essayにおいては崩されます。
例えばMBA Whartonの場合applicantsはだいたい6000名と発表があります。一人当たりの書類の量はどの程度の分量になるのでしょうか? Whartonの場合letterが２通。ざっくり500 words を3 questions 用意すると1500 wordsになります。2通で3000 wordsですね。Essayの場合2本で1000 wordsでしょうか。Additional essayもありますがここでは考慮しないとしましょう。この他にresumeもありますがletterの分量を多めに盛っていると思いますのでこの分も200 wordsと少なめにcountしましょう。一人当たり合計でだいたい4200 words程度になる計算になります。
Whartonのadmission committeeの数は何名いるのかは分かりません。適当に20名程度、としておきましょう。20名というとかなりの人数になりますのでこんなに大勢いるかは怪しいのですが…
上記の仮定のもとに議論を進めると6000名のapplicantsの場合、合計で25200000 wordsにもなります。2500万wordsです。これはやばいですね。書いている私がビックリしました。実際足切りに引っかかる方もいると思いますが、足切り自体はかなり低いラインで設定されていると思いますので簡略化のためにここでは考慮しないとします。厳密で複雑な議論を行うことを目的としてはいないため問題ないでしょう。
では仮に20名のcommitteeで裁く場合、一体何words読まされることになると思いますか？
単純に20で割れば良い、となりますので25200000を20で割ると一人当たり126万wordsを読む計算になります。
重要なのでもう一度言います。126万wordsは300 words/pageで計算すると4200 pagesの分量にもなってしまいます。これは果てしない量です。
Admission committeeはapplicants evaluation以外にも仕事を抱えていると思いますのでそれらと並行して126万wordsをさばいていくことになります。
日本人のessay作成者はこの事実を理解した上でessayを作成してはいないと思います。Essayを読みevaluateするという作業がどの様なものか、が想像し難い場合はこちらのpageのessayを読んでみてください (Sample Essayと検索をかけて単純に出てきたものになります）。Essayの質は低い方が良いのでこれらのessayのqualityは高くても低くても問題ありません。Good Essayとはどの様なものか？のイメージが沸いていない方は最低20本程度は必ず読んでください。途中できつければskimmingされても問題ありません。とにかく最低20は読みましょう。いけるのであればとりあえずホームページ上に掲載されているものは全て熟読されると良いでしょう。
20 essaysはたったの10000 words程度でしょう。Applicationの書類は一人当たり約4000 wordsになりますのでたったの2.5人分です。何も問題ないかと思います。
はい、20本以上集中して読むことはできたでしょうか？何本skimmingしましたか？途中で読むことを断念された方もいるかと思います。
それと同時にKennedy School admissionが言っていた、読み終わった後にlasting impressionがあった、というessayはありましたか？
126万wordsを読む立場にいる人に向けて書類（Essay）を書かなければいけないとはどういうことか少しでも理解できましたか？
Essayの多くは読んでもらえる結末を迎えていないだろう、という事が理解できたかと思います。途中で読んでいることが少しでも辛くなったその瞬間に、あなたが書いたessayは読むことが放棄されているor読み飛ばされている可能性が極めて高いです。なんせ126万 wordsです。私であればバンバン飛ばします。飛ばしても飛ばしてもessayは無限に沸いてきますので最後まできっちり読めるのはほんの一握りになると思います。非常にbusyなcommitteeがessayとしてappleaingではないtechnical essay (fitやexperienceのhighlightを狙って書かれたessay)を読み通すことは私の想像上では不可能です。少なくとも私にはできません。Blog readerの方にはできますか？殆どの方はEssayは途中でgive upをしてその他のbackgroundで合否判定を行うと思います。
M&Aにおいて/途上国のprojectにおいて…の様にleadershipを発揮した！その時に私は…に感じた！と単純にessayを作成すると多くの場合多くの平凡なessayに埋もれlasting impressionを残すことはできません。そもそもそれらのbackgroundはresumeやletterから既に把握していることになりますのでEssayとして差別化はおこなえません。自分のユニークなbackground/強みを書いて差別化をしにいったとしても数多くのessayに埋もれてしまう、と以前説明させて頂きましたが20本以上のessayを実際に読んだ後であればもう少しclearに理解できると思います。ユニークさ、という点ではそもそも全てのessayは相応にユニークですからね。それと同時にいかにlasting impressionを残すessayを作成する、ということが困難かも同時に理解できるでしょう。
留学当時私はhigh quality essayというもののイメージが湧いていなかったので毎日Writing Center 、教授が雇った “優秀な”大学院生にfeedbackがもらえる塾のようなところ、にほぼ毎日通いつめました。その中でもこの人essay書けるんだろうな、と感じたのは2名だけでした（20名程度はいたと思いますが）。そのうち1名の方からは1 paragraphを読んだ時点ではこんなに書けているとは思わなかった、とfeedbackを受けました。
私個人的にはよく書けた、と思っていたので当時はピンと来ませんでしたが今となっては彼女のfeedbackが理解できます。
Essay作成者の実力は1 paragraphを読めばそれだけでかなり高い精度で測定することが可能です。
例えば上記のサイトで紹介されているものを３本randomにpickします。それぞれHBS/Wharton/Stanford MBA essayになります。

Soccer has been my passion since the age of 12. I played for my school and I still lead pickup soccer games on the weekends. In my overseas travels, I have also found that soccer can be the common language of the world. One example of this was during the time I spent at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea. As soon as I got there, I of course went looking for someplace to play soccer. I discovered a foreign student team that plays against other departments. At a very young age, I became aware of the inequity in our society, and understood that I’d been blessed as one of the more fortunate. I felt a strong desire to help the children I saw begging on the streets, and to contribute to the growth and advancement of weaker populations. I started volunteering in events such as polio drop day and food donations. When I asked my parents what more could I do, they taught me that to truly help others, one must be in a strong, stable position oneself. Harper Library, situated at the center of the main quadrangle at the University of Chicago, resembles a converted abbey, with its vaulted ceilings and arched windows. The library was completed in 1912, before Enrico Fermi built the world’s first nuclear reactor, before Milton Friedman devised the permanent income hypothesis, and well before Barack Obama taught Constitutional Law. Generations of scholars have pored over Adam Smith and Karl Marx in the main reading room, penned world-class treatises at the long wooden tables, and worn their coats indoors against the drafts in the spacious Gothic hall. As I tumble through the air, time seems to slow. I have fallen hard many times before, but even before I hit the ground I can tell this fall is different. I complete one and a half back flips and slam shoulders-first into the slope. As I lie on the hill, the snow jammed into the hood of my jacket begins to melt, and icy water runs down my back. I do not yet know that the impact has broken my neck.
Essay自体のquestionも異なればそもそもprogramも異なります。後半部の展開はここからだけだと推し量れませんが上３本のMBA サンプルエッセイと比較すると下３本の方が明らかにqualityに差があります。根本的なessayとしての格が異なります。書き手の“優秀さ”が下3本からは感じられますね。英語力自体も下３本の方が高そうに見えますが単純な英語力や内容ではなく書き手が持っている根本的な能力の差がessay qualityに影響を与える、ということを理解できるでしょう。

7本目のessayがやはりなんだか凄そうな雰囲気が一番感じられますね。
#1-#3のessayは高い確率で途中skimming or skipされて他のessayに埋もれてしまうでしょう。読んでいて（少なくとも私は）boringです。勿論今後の展開にもよるのですがこのレベルだとessayで勝負することは厳しいです。
自分で作成したessayの評価を行いたい場合sample essayに自分のものを混ぜてみて読み比べると良いと思います。内容はどのようなものでも構いません。10本読んでlasting impressionが残らなければessayで差別化は行えてはいない、ということです。#4-#7のような純粋にhigh quality essayを目指したい場合表面的なハードスキルではなく根本的にessayとして高いqualityを作成（自己のanalyzationの高さを滲ませる事）を心掛けてください。でなければあなたが頑張って書いたessayは場合によっては読まれることなく合否が裏で決定されているでしょう。
書類を大量に読む、ということは皆さんが想像しているよりも大きい負荷がかかるということ。
志望動機やエッセイネタ自体はどうでもよく、1-2 paragraph読んだだけでほぼ書き手の能力測定は完了しているということ。
2点を常に念頭に置いてessayの作成を行いましょう。
