Personal Statementの根本的な書き方について解説します。
日本はTOEFL scoreだけでなくapplication essayも世界的に後進国になっています。
ここではcredibilityをあげるために私個人の意見は省略させて頂き、各schoolが直接出している情報をもとに書き方の説明のみ行います。
Essayを複数提出するprogramもありますし、学校により若干求められているtopicは異なりますがcoreになるpersonal statementの書き方についてまとめさせていただきます。大学留学のcommon application等もPS formatになりますので参考にいただくと良いでしょう。
MPP Harvard Kennedy School
学校公認の情報sourceには見えませんが実際にKennedy school admissionにsitされていた方のコメントになります。
長いresumeのようになっている。resumeに記載されているaccomplishmentsが書かれておりwho they areかのinsightを伝えることが不可能であるため記載すべきではない。
Kennedy schoolが求めているessayはstoryであること。そしてwho you areをshowすること。Kennedy Schoolはleaderになる人物を求めているがleadership experienceを所持している必要はなくleadership potentialがある人物、differenceをmake できる人物を求めている。
もしあなたがessayにおいてwell communicateできなければ一体どのようにleadershipを発揮できるというのでしょう？
What you can bring to Kennedy schoolをtellするのではなくshowすること。

Essay 2
Describe an impactful experience or accomplishment that is not reflected elsewhere in your application. How will you use what you learned through that experience to contribute to the Wharton community? (400 words)
例えばStanfordのessayの場合、それはStanfordだから…と思われてしまうかもしれませんのでWhartonをpickさせて頂きます。
我々が求めているのはtypicalなpersonal statementであり、このessayを通じて知りたいことはWho you areである。Not reflected in your application topicを書くこと。アドバイスとしてはApplicationを全てcloseすること。数日休暇をとり if you have something else burning, that is the topic you have to write.
Particular story like work experienceやwho I want to beを理解するためにはwho I am at its coreをtellする必要がありこれがそのessayである。

Chicagoの全てのLaw school共通essay向けのアドバイスになります。学校側が出している情報でここまで参考になるページはないと思いますのでLLM以外の方も参考にされると良いでしょう。
求めているものはwho you areの説明。Your goal should be to educate the Admissions Committee about you.
Why Law schoolの描写もする必要はなし。
書く内容については you are the best judge of what you should writeである。Legal topicに触れる必要はなくhonestlyにpersonal storyを描写すること。
記載してはいけないこと
This isn’t the place to convince us how qualified you are. Your qualifications will shine through in other parts of your application.
It is not the place to demonstrate your knowledge of the law or the role of attorneys.
It is not necessary to cite the names of our faculty and programs from our website in your personal statement unless you are placing the reference in a meaningful context.
Essayの注意点
偏らないように様々なprogramからの情報を集めさせて頂きましたが、少なくともこれらの大学院のessayにおいて、Job related experience/academic topic related discussionを原則求めてはいません。日本人大学院applicantsの多くの方はprofessionalな側面に強くfocusしがちです。例えば自分は〇〇 backgroundはユニークだからここを差別化して、自分の強みをハイライトして等を記述される方が散見されますがProfessional/Academicに纏わるqualificationはResume/Score/Letterから判断されますのでこれらをApplication Essayに記載されてはいけません。
これらの描写はEssayとしての質を大幅にdown gradeさせますので悪い意味で差別化されますのでご注意を。
